Twinkle, Twinkle, T2*

In Chapter 18 of Intermediate Physics for Medicine and Biology, Russ Hobbie and I discuss the relaxation time constants T1 and T2 used during magnetic resonance imaging. We also introduce the time constant T2* (pronounced tee-two-star), which includes spin dephasing caused by heterogeneities in the external magnetic field. Spin echo methods can be used to reverse relaxation by T2*, recovering T2.

For those of you who don't like such technical explanations, below is a video of the song “Twinkle, Twinkle, T2*.”

See ya next year!
